Read about our trip to BERMUDA MAMBO NIGHTS EVENT in Aug. 2010!!!
Written by Vanesa Stay, Director of Latin Energy:
I look forward to Aug. Mambo Nights Event every year! This year, it was even better…
There were 11 of us from Latin Energy and it was a blast! My dance partner Rafael and I arrived on Thursday afternoon and we were welcomed by a Mambo Nights Taxi pickup who took us to the Fairmont Princess South Hampton Hotel where shortly after, all dancers and BermudaSalsa.com staff had an orientation and welcoming meeting. This is the kind of event where organizers and staff really take care and appreciate their artists and therefore, we really appreciate them back :)
THURSDAY
That evening we all met at Lidos’ Complex for a wonderful night of live music by famous New York Salsa Artists Willie Torres and Ariacne Trujillo who played Latin music all night. Lido’s Complex is a restaurant / bar / lounge (part of the Elbow Beach Hotel) which is right by the ocean. The dance floor, lounge and bar, have an amazing ocean view and it’s covered by a beautiful white canopy tent (in case it rains) which was the case on Thursday night but not before we had enjoyed a few hours of social dancing under the stars. Later on, we moved the party inside to another great place with hardwood floors, a bar and a great balcony view from above with comfortable couches and lounge chairs for those who wanted to take a little rest from dancing. Everyone had a tremendous amount of energy being the first night and all. Many dancers took the floor by storm including Anya & Christian from TV Show “Dancing with the Stars”.
FRIDAY
Friday was a very busy day for all performers, we had rehearsals most of the day for all the routines we were supposed to perform both Friday and Saturday nights. Tech rehearsals were in full costume to be able to determine the best lighting for each piece. We started at about 11AM and finished at 6:30 PM (with a break in between for lunch and rest). Friday night we were scheduled to perform our new piece “I SEE YOU” inspired by the movie AVATAR. The make-up for this routine is very time consuming therefore we rushed back to the room to get ready. It took us exactly 2 hours to finish! (Makeup being 1.5 hrs of it). We were chosen to close the first set of shows (before intermission) and we were really anxious and excited to show our new routine! We danced it better than in rehearsal which is always a good sign :) and between the detailed costumes, make-up, wig and background video clips, we were told to be one of the favorite routines that night getting a standing ovation by most. We could hear the cheering getting louder and louder and as our ending pose comes into place, we need to be completely focused since it’s one of the most challenging parts of our routine. Thank God all lifts and tricks worked wonderfully and safely. We received many complements and had a line-up of people wanting to take their photo with us in costume. We felt like Mickey Mouse and Goofy at Disney. LOL
After another hour of scrubbing to try and get the blue makeup off, we joined the party which was a blast! We social danced to great music by DJ MAS, Nilson and Ricky until very, very late that night.
SATURDAY
Saturday was our first beach day! Beautiful sunny day, perfect clear water, pink white sand... we could not ask for more! Spent most of the day and afternoon at the private Fairmont Beach which has comfy chairs, bar, restaurant and all you need to enjoy a beautiful day by the ocean. The workshops were also being held at the beach. That afternoon, we also had our tech rehearsal for Sat. night shows which went on from 4 to 6:30 PM. We then rushed to get ready for the shows. We were scheduled to perform 3 routines. We opened the show with our AfroCuban routine, we also did our “Cascabeles” (paso doble, flamenco, salsa) & Rumba. Many groups from Montreal, New Jersey, New York and Bermuda also performed wonderful routines for the “Evolution of Mambo” dance production.
SUNDAY
Sunday was our first official “vacation” day. We headed to the Horshoe Bay Beach which is right beside the private hotel beach. This is where the party gets crazy. First everyone relaxes and enjoys the sun, ocean and view. Some go for walks along the beach, some play games, soccer being the most popular one. Others climb rocks or just socialize with friends and catch up. Around 5 PM, the coolers appear and the real party begins. This year it was a blast! We had a fire, courtesy of DJ Nilson ;) and we were highly entertained by weird made up games by Edson from Montreal, such as “the weakest link” and a bit of wrestling etc. (Watch video clip and you’ll see)
After a full long day at the beach, everyone still wants to party even more, so we headed to the Lido Complex where Willie and Ariacne were playing live. We social danced and had a wonderful time dancing under the stars with a gorgeous ocean view and moonlight until midnight. Then we all decided to check out another club at the Fairmont where they play a mix of RNB, Hip Hop, Reggaeton and a bit of Latin music… this place is called “THE WINE CELLAR” where we continued to party until they closed at 3 AM. BUT for some people the party didn’t end there… many continued to party by the pool until 5 AM… and a few had even more energy left and continued the party by the beach until 8 AM! Needless to say Monday was a sleep in day. ;)
MONDAY
After sleeping in, we headed to Hamilton, the capital of Bermuda where we looked forward to spending most of the day on a boat cruise organized by Wayne of BermudaSalsa.com. The 2 story boat is a comfortable size for about 40-50 people. We left around 2pm and got to see the breath taking view as we were taken around the island. We stopped at a perfect quiet spot where everyone jumped off the boat into the ocean for a swim. This is like a tradition now, everyone tries to show off their diving abilities and some don’t land so well ;) but everyone has fun! The weather was perfect and the cruise was very relaxing.
That evening we headed to a restaurant bar called “BoneFish” at DockYard. (This is where the large cruise ships dock) The location has a amazing view of the ocean, park and all the cruise ships, making it very romantic and almost magical. The DJ sets up outside on the wooden patio and after a short lesson and great Italian food, the party started. We danced to Latin music for a few hours until it started raining… but the rain didn’t stop us, we continued to dance under the rain and it was even MORE FUN! Shoes came off and the party got SUPER CRAAAAAAZY! Sorry, can't post those video clips! LOL
TUESDAY
Tuesday was the last day of the trip for most people. It was a relaxing day at the beach and ended at the Grotto Bay Hotel for the “Farewell Party”. This hotel is also very beautiful. I don’t think there is a place in Bermuda that is not like a fairytale. The bar, is right by the pool, the pool is right by the ocean and next to the dance floor… everything is picture perfect and to make it even more perfect, this hotel has it’s own crystal caves!!!! We arrived at around 7 PM and enjoyed a great buffet. Then we took a walk to the caves, the beach and around the hotel. Around 9 PM, The Marshall of Magic entertained us with a magic show followed by a dance lesson. Then the music started and we danced the night away…
For most, this was the perfect end of the trip. For me, I still had another 5 days to enjoy the beach, the perfect weather and Bermuda’s friendly people. I enjoyed the rest of my stay with locals and a few others who stayed behind to enjoy the Island and had a wonderful time!
After a few days of sharing wonderful experiences between professionals dancers, students and locals, the friendships and bonds created will last a lifetime!
Special thanks to the organizers of this event, Travis and Angela of BermudaSalsa.com for organizing yet another successful, well organized and fun event. The warmth and friendship that Bermudians offer, make this event VERY special and unforgettable.
If you haven’t been to Mambo Nights yet, book your trip now! You won’t regret it.
Love you guys and see you at MAMBO NIGHTS!
